What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a chronic aliment, that occurs either due to the failure of the pancreas to make insulin, or the bodies' incapacity to utilize the insulin produced. This effectively leads to a raised level of glucose in the blood, also known as hyperglycaemia.
Over the long-term, high glucose levels may lead to damage to the body and failure of vital organs and tissues. Hence, the correct treatment and management of diabetes are vital.
There are basically three types of diabetes,
Type 1: It is an auto immune disorder, where the immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. Thus, resulting in very little or no insulin being released into the body. About 10% of people suffering from diabetes suffer from type 1 diabetes.
Type 2: It occurs either due to low production of insulin or the inability of the body to properly use the insulin produced, also known as insulin insensitivity. About 90 percent of people with diabetes suffers from type 2.
Gestational diabetes is a brief condition that arises during pregnancy. There is an increased risk of imminent diabetes for both mother and child. It affects roughly two to four percent of all pregnancies.
